Torture cops walk free

August 14, 2013

Naivalurua is up to his neck in a criminal cover-up

Two police who were charged with three counts of unlawful supply of illicit drugs after marijuana exhibits went missing from Nabua Police Station in May last year have walked free after the Magistrate said there was no evidence. One of the two, Amani Bosenawai, was one of the police identified in the notorious torture video. Yet again the smell of something not right is wafting around. Does Bosenawai’s knowledge of the names involved in the torture video and the cover-up by Naivalurua mean that his silence has to be bought?

Was it the feather hat?

August 13, 2013

The joke that just gets funnier

The last time the Casino deadline was extended Larry Claunch responded by spending money on a new sign and parking a digger on a vacant block beside the road to Denarau Island. Khaiyum has at last responded to the facts that can’t be denied but all he’s done is make more empty threats. “This is Larry’s last chance’, again. It’s obvious Larry is Frank’s favoured one, with the dictator in his pocket. Was it the feather hat that won Frank’s support? Or was it just cash paid into Frank’s pocket?

Bainimarama sitting on the constitution

August 13, 2013

First Bainimarama refused to translate the Constitution into Fijian, and now he says he’s changed it, but he’s refusing to release the new draft claiming that he has to translate it into Fijian before he can even show us what the changes are. He’s hoping he can sneak the new constitution in without anyone having any say. That’s the way it’s been from the start. He chose his own Constitutional Commission, then he burned their draft. Then he said we could have a Constitutional Assembly, but he refused to name who the members were, and now he’s sitting on a new draft constitution, refusing to show us until the last moment before he declares he’s imposed it on us.

What’s behind the port deal?

August 1, 2013

A Sri Lankan company, Aitken Spence, has been handed control of management and operation of the Fiji Ports Corporation for fifteen years. How this will operate has not been made clear. Will they set the charges for port services? Have they paid money to the regime for this right to get a percentage of everything that passes across our wharves? Bainimarama and Khaiyum think they own all our national assets and have a right to do whatever they like with them.

Show us the constitution

August 1, 2013

Having first refused to translate his draft constitution into vernaculars, Bainimarama is refusing to show us the revised draft until it is also available in Fijian and Hindi. He claims we’ll see that native land is now fully protected, but that’s what he told us before he made the changes we’re still waiting to see. Why are we still waiting to see the new parts of the constitution which are supposed to protect iTaukei land? Is he hoping he can release it and straight away put it into force before all the people affected by it can read and understand the new draft for themselves?

Five minutes to read the constitution

July 29, 2013

Bainimarama was forced to translate his tailor-made Constitution into Hindi and Fijian but he now tells us it will be released next month and be in place by the end of the month. He can’t even pretend that people will have an opportunity to read it and say whether they think the new draft gives proper protection to iTaukei land. He got some idea of how angry this made the iTaukei community when he said that he was going to impose the constitution no matter what two months ago, so he’d better be prepared to face their wrath.

Khaiyum massaging the figures

Our top diplomats

July 26, 2013

Here they are, three of Bainimarama’s top envoys. It wouldn’t be any worse if he sent Larry, Moe and Curly. Filimoni Kau was despatched to Korea when he could no longer be trusted with the Land Bank. In Korea he gained immediate fame as a dog thief. Then there’s Teleni who got carried away with religious mania in the Police Force. Finally there’s Peceli Vocea the former Permanent Secretary of the Finance Ministry. What’s he doing as a diplomat? Did he have to be sent safely and quietly overseas because he knows too much about the Nur Bano Ali channel for secret payment of Ministerial salaries?

Arun Prasad’s real crime

July 17, 2013

Sacked Ba Special Administrator Arun Prasad is denying allegations that he obtained waivers and discounts for properties owned by him and his family. These rumours emerged after Khaiyum sacked him for his alleged bullying of squatters who were asked to co-operate in putting a road into a new sub-division which would provide housing for them. Khaiyum is keen to present himself as the champion of the poor but more than that he’s trying to make it look as though it’s quite natural for him to be sacking Special Administrators without proper process. He knows there is simmering anger over his treatment of Special Administrator for Sigatoka and Nadi, Aisea Tuidraki and sacked CEO of the Nadi Town Council, Nemia Tagi.

Fuel price bribe

July 15, 2013

Oil prices have been steady over the past year

After watching fuel prices rise for the past 6 years Khaiyum’s Kommerce Kommission has granted a decrease to try to win favour with the voters. The claim is that the “The huge reductions are due to the reduction in world prices of crude oil and gas.” Really? Are oil prices on the slide around the world? This price reduction proves only that we’ve been paying too much in the past.
