Why have investors got cold feet?

September 9, 2014

Frank has turned up with his shovel but the building is on hold and we don’t really know why

An $18 million renovation and rebuilding of Paradise beverages’ brewery has been delayed at the last minute by major shareholder Coca Cola Amatil putting it on hold. No real explanation has been given for the 3 months delay but investors are probably waiting for a new Government to solve what they call “a building problem”. In Frank’s Fiji who knows what’s going on?

Khaiyum’s personal police investigate

September 5, 2014

Khaiyum speaks and Langman obeys

From its very beginning FICAC has been the personal police force of Khaiyum, trumping up charges against political rivals. Now it has been given the job of investigating a complaint from an 80 year old couple who complained that “a Fijian of Indian descent employee of the courier company” came to their home with voting papers and ticked the number of a candidate for the couple, even though it was not the candidate of their choice. This should be investigated by the Fiji Police Force, not by the private police force of the Secretary-General of FrankFirst. The voter was wanting to vote Fiji Labour party. Can anyone guess the name of  the candidate whose number was ticked?

No time for finger pointing on the Golan Heights

September 1, 2014

While 44 of our peacekeepers remain in captivity we should refrain from finger-pointing and concentrate our thoughts and prayers on their safe delivery from the hands of a group whose murderous record gives us every reason to fear for the safety of our boys. There will be a time to ask questions. Were the troops properly prepared for their mission?  Has the effectiveness of the RFMF as military force been weakened under the 16 year rule of Bainimarama who was more politician than military leader, pushing out a whole generation of the RFMF’s top officers? Has 7 years of being cut off from access to international standard military training from our traditional allies cut the skill base? Answers to these questions can wait but these are the questions being asked in private, even if our censored media could never let them be asked in public.

Frank’s plans for sugar -a new CSR?

August 28, 2014

Islands Business News has forecast the collapse of the sugar industry when the current EU agreement under the Lome Convention lapses.  We’ll face tariff barriers that will kill our high-priced production. The EU offered 350 million Euros in aid to lift our productivity but Bainimarama knocked this back in 2009.  He wasn’t interested in an election until he had had at least 4 years dictatorship so he could censure the media, stack the judiciary and jail political rivals.

A blogger on another site claimed that the sugar industry’s problems started in 1987 but the facts are clear. In 1986 we had 22,000 growers producing 4.1 million tonnes of cane from 70,0000 hectares.  In 1996 we were still producing 4.3 million tonnes of cane.  By 2006 after leases were not renewed and growers dropped out, production fell to 3.2 million tonnes.

It took Frank to cut acreage and yields to the point where we produce on 1.5 million tonnes of cane in 2012.  Sugar produced fell from 310,000 tonnes in 2006 to 150,000 tonnes in 2012.

So what is Frank’s plan? In January we were told of a Chinese mission visiting to discuss a possible refinery joint venture and the scope for purchasing 100,000 tonnes of sugar in the medium term.  Does this mean Frank plans to sell FSC to a Chinese company?  If he does we can be sure he’ll bankrupt cane farmers first and hand them and their land to a new CSR, the Chinese Sugar Refinery.

Frank’s plan for the sugar industry is well hidden from sight but his plan for power is easy to see in legislation like the Land Use Decree which gives him the power to hand huge tracts of land to a Chinese sugar refinery.  Cane farmers should not think the Land Use Decree was crated for their benefit. If it was, he would have used it for that purpose already, but he’s left cane farmers to the TLTB.

The starter’s gun has fired

Free-Riders on the Blue Bus of Corruption

The announcement of polling stations for the September 17 election is the starter’s gun for the race to get voters to the polls. Up to now parties have been busy countering the propaganda lies of the Ministry of Misinformation. From now on they will be planning how to assist voters to understand the game of Election Sudoko and where they have to play. Let the race begin. The parties whose members believe in what they stand for have an opportunity to explain to voters how they can use the monster form. It will take a lot of personal hard work to make sure people understand how to use it and the parties, the real parties with real members, will meet the challenge better that the Free-Riders on the Blue Bus of Corruption.

Five reasons why Frank cut taxes for the rich

These are five of the big business men who are thought to be donating to Frank First for the Big Blue Bus of corruption.  They have all benefited from the big tax cuts given to companies and they know how to show their gratitude.  Meanwhile the rest of us are filling the FrankFirst pork barrel with VAT.

Frankenomics – raiding the cookie jar

August 21, 2014

The NFP have asked one of the many questions arising from the Audit Reports which were finally squeezed out of Bainimarama.  Among 13 other concerns raised in the 2012 report was “the overstatment of Sinking Fund by $138.5 million”.  The Sinking Fund is money put aside for payment of future debts when they fall due.  It looks like the $138.5 million was put aside and then raided by the regime, no doubt to fund Frank’s vote-buying with brushcutters and other hand-outs.

Forced to come clean

August 19, 2014

Bainimarama has been defying demands from political parties to release the full Audited Accounts for the period he has held power but now he has quietly released some audit statements. He must be feeling the pressure.  The rival parties must be getting through to the voters. People are starting to realise there must be something to hide.

The oldest of the reports, the 2007 audited statements, shows it was signed off by Eroni Vatuloka (remember him, he used to be Auditor general until he “resigned” after he decided he would investigate Bainimarama’s leave pay-out). Vatuloka’s sign-off was sat on for nearly 6 years.  Why was this?  Bainimarama seized power in the name of “transparency” but he refused to handover all of the normal documents and compromised the independence of the Auditor General’.

There’s a lot to go through in these reports and all parties will be combing through them for facts. Try this for a start. It is confirmed that the economy shrank by 6.6% in 2007, by 0.1% in 2008, by 2.2%, or 3% or 1.9% in 2009, and grew by only 0.3% in 2010.  The figures change as it seems there’s been on-going recalculation of the output of the economy to try to make them look better, but they show the devastation the coup has caused to the economy.

Frank desperate for Indo-Fijian candidates

August 19, 2014

It seems Frank’s First Family First Party has been so desperate to find Indo-Fijian candidates they’ve nominated Praveen Bala, Khaiyum’s town boss for Lautoka and Ba who is still facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving.  And after FDN protested that Bala has received a third adjournment in his charges because he was a regime crony a report has surfaced on Fiji Leaks that the regime is anxious to process Bala through a tame magistrate to get him off the hook.

Khaiyum’s private police force

August 18, 2014

Khaiyum has ordered FICAC to investigate comments made by former PM Qarase about the ballot paper.  Khaiyum claims Qarase was inciting hatred when he linked the numbering system on the new ballot papers to the Muslim’s holy book but it’s FICAC investigating, not the the police.  Is this why Khaiyum made sure his FICAC decree gave FICAC officers the power to arrest and search, including the power to arrest without a warrant? They used their search powers two weeks ago to intimidate the Citizen’s Constitutional Forum by searching their offices.  Khaiyum’s claim about the Qarase statement was made as Sec-Gen of the FF Party and then FICAC went into action like some personal police force.  What could be more corrupting than using the body which is supposed to fight corruption to attack political rivals?
