Stefan Pichler commenced as the new CEO of Fiji Airways just over twelve months ago. His predecessor, David Pflieger, left unexpectedly in May 2013 after deciding not to renew his 3 year contract. Pflieger’s flight was unexpected because he’d just talked the Board into signing a contract for the most ambitious purchase of new aircraft in the airline’s history. It led to a lot of speculation about his motives. Was he running from disaster? The loss of another CEO just over twelve months later makes the mystery even deeper. Some people will immediately assume the involvement of Khaiyum. He has bad reputation for interfering other Ministers business. We all remember Sam Saumatua resigned after Khaiyum butted into his ministry. Of course Khaiyum is no longer responsible for Tourism, but as Minister for Public Enterprises he will still want to call all the shots.
