Mere steps into qoliqoli

Our new Lands and Mineral Resources Minister Mereseini Vuniwaqa has confirmed there is a freeze on foreshore developments, especially in areas where mangroves are present. She said public consultations are now being undertaken which is long overdue. She admitted the mangrove plan has been underway for years but up to now there’s been no open debate. So far Mere Vuniwaqa has shown herself to be a courageous minister and one who speaks her mind rather than waiting for orders from the Bai and Khai, so let’s hope she can have the courage to recognise iTaukei feelings in relation to qoliqoli and negotiate a framework that recognises the reality of qoliqoli so that qoliqoli claimants can support responsible developments.
