Elections bring backdowns

After 8 years of “my way or the higway” Bainimarama is being forced to listen to voters and backdown from his high handed arrogance
Two of his dictatorial laws have been scrapped.  Political parties that want to hold election campaign meetings can now appeal to courts if their requests for permission are knocked back. Previously they were denied access to the courts. And a similar law banning individuals defamed by the uneected ministers suing them for libel has also been scrapped. We can thank the fact that he’s facing voters for the first time for this concession to democracy rather than any conversion to the cause of democracy.
