Strutting and cockier than ever
Even though no-one has elected to him any position of power – and no-one ever will – Khaiyum has spent the past six and a half years firing people who were lawfully appointed. The latest are casualties are staff from the Elections Office whose contracts were “terminated”. Their sins? They “did not follow certain processes and procedures that have been set out”. What does this mean? Helping SODELPA and other Parties meet the requirements of the Political parties Decree. Let’s not forget that the former head of the Elections Office, Mere Vuniwaqa, was another one of those mysterious resignations “for personal reasons”. Another scalp claimed by the Khaiyum axe.

It’s clear that the Political Parties Decree was designed to knock political opponents out of the ring before the campaigning even started. ASK must have promised Bainimarama he could do this. That’s why Bainimarama was prepared to sacrifice Mere Vuniwaqa. Like all the others exiting the regime, she went quietly, but everybody knows the truth.

@A
Mere Vuniwaqa’s resignation was just one of many resignations of regime senior officials made without any proper explanation (apart from the obviously phony line about “personal reasons”).
My guess is that had to do with the Electoral Office staff sacked last week for helping Political Parties understand what they need to do to meet the requirements of the Political Parties Decree is the real reason.
The only place where this regime has any transparency is in relation to its motives. The aim of the unbelievably onerous Political Parties Decree is to knock parties out of the race. ASK never intended that Elections office staff should explain what law required. It’s meant as a trap.
Mere Vuniwaqa must not have been in on this plan. She must have thought that Elections Office staff are there to serve the public, not ASK, so she had to go.
