Will Rotumans be allowed consultation?

The Rotuma Island Council has asked the Government if the revised Rotuma Decree of 2013 and the revised Rotuma Lands Decree 2013 could be brought back to Rotuma for consultation before they were promulgated. Council member Antonio Moare said “people need to be fully satisfied with it before it becomes a law”. This is not the way of the Bainikhaiyum regime. Indigenous Fijians have had decrees affecting their lands and traditional institutions put into effect with zero consultation. In the case of Rotumans, all Permanent Secretary to the PM’s Office Lt Col Pio Tikoduadua could say was “they will look into the issue’. He would need to ask Bainimarama who would need in turn to ask Khaiyum. Will Rotumans be treated the same as their Fijian counterparts?
